CHE BELLO obsesses over…

February 25, 2008 at 11:08 pm (Obsessions) (, , , , )

It’s time to start up another periodic feature of this lil’ ol’ blog: my YouTube obsessions! I spend way too much time on the Internet’s most popular video-sharing site, and think you should too. (And no, I was not paid to say that, unfortunately.)

I saw the gem of an Irish film “Once” over my winter break and have been obsessed with it ever since. The tagline itself was enough to hook me forever, being eternally hopelessly romantic: “How often do you find the right person?” Lead singer for The Frames Glen Hansard and the darling Czech songstress Marketa Irglova star in a movie about falling in love over delightfully melancholy indie music. The tunes are all original, co-written by the pair, ((who I learned the other day are dating in real life and if they ever ever break up I will cry for decades!)) and the soundtrack’s stand-out number “Falling Slowly” won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. So take a lazy Sunday evening and go rent this brilliant movie, but for now, here’s the scene where the two first collaborate on the Oscar-winning song:

CHE BELLO looks pretty.

February 25, 2008 at 5:27 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , , , , , , )

I caught roughly the second half of the Academy Awards last night at the gym, and I can’t say I was disappointed. I’ve loved Marion Cotillard ever since seeing her in Big Fish, and that love only grew with A Very Long Engagement, so I’m glad to see her take home the Golden Guy for Best Actress. I have seen neither “There Will Be Blood” nor “No Country For Old Men,” so I can’t really delve into their merits. But I can delve into red carpet fashion!

CHE BELLO learns French.

February 23, 2008 at 1:45 pm (Saturday Sayings) (, , , , , )

This week’s Saturday Saying comes to us from those pre-imminent connoisseurs of bread, wine, cheese, and everything fashionable, the French. It’s also the tiniest bit politically inspired. But, on to the phrase: cri de coeur. A cri de coeur is a heartfelt appeal, literally, a cry of the heart. And the best example I’ve come across in a long while came at the end of this week’s Democratic presidential nominee debate in Texas:

CHE BELLO combats pretentiousness.

February 18, 2008 at 8:21 pm (General Rants) (, , , , , )

People that go to my school are pretentious little pricks who need to be pimp-slapped.

This morning we’re discussing changes to the banking industry over the last 30 years in my Collective Bargaining class. It’s clear that technology has caused major shifts to banking employment, with ATMs displacing human tellers and electronic check processing eliminating the need for many back-office workers. But a select few of my classmates, sporting their designer sunglasses, Ralph Lauren sweaters (of course with polos underneath, collars popped), and obnoxious boat shoes, decide to take these trends and extrapolate to the extreme.

CHE BELLO goes to the mall.

February 16, 2008 at 6:36 pm (Shopping) (, , , , , )

I’m in a shopping mood but don’t know what to buy. I’d like a nice black sweater, but haven’t been able to locate one yet. But I have come across some cute items at one of my favorite stores: Heritage 1981 Owned by Forever 21, they have tons of kitschy/indie finds for very very low prices. The only problem is that their Internet selection is limited, both in scope and by available sizes. But if you’re looking for a new place to shop, start your search here. Between Heritage, Urban Outfitters, and American Apparel, you should be able to find everything you need.

CHE BELLO learns Italian.

February 16, 2008 at 3:20 pm (Saturday Sayings) (, , , )

I thought I’d start this weekly feature with the title of my blog, che bello. It’s an Italian expression which roughly translates to “how lovely,” and is used to express enthusiasm or pleasure. For instance, if your boyfriend sends you a stunningly modern vase full of bright red and pink tulips for Valentine’s Day, “Che bello!” would be an appropriate response.

I chose “che bello” as the title of this blog because I plan to write about things that make me think “how lovely,” and that I’m enthusiastic about sharing with all of you. Neat designs, exciting web applications, my earth-shaking realizations about life and love and everything in between — that’s what you’ll find at che bello.
